Initially, we explored 3D sketches of the client’s kitchen in greens and yellows, before realizing their craving for color may best be addressed with a striking green tile moment and glowing live greenery throughout. When additional guests arrive, the table extends with a leaf and a bench that is tucked along the wall acts as additional seating. In between gatherings, as it sits off to the side, it functions as seating for putting shoes on before school and a gathering place for books and bags. Everything in the space has a job and yet everything also looks beautiful. Family photographs in white frames create a composition that feels personal but not cluttered. A unified frame color offers calm and continuity, while the various sized photos keep the arrangement from feeling too formal. Small wall-mounted planters woven among the frames, interrupt the orderly grid with something soft and more organic. The greenery adds color and keeps an otherwise white space from feeling sterile. Flexibility doesn’t have to feel complicated. Simply knowing what you need out of a space can steer you towards creative design solutions. Wanting to maximize the functionality of every bit of space, we focused on an unused wall between two entrances. Adding a simple cabinet and open shelves created cherished real estate in this small kitchen, adding a spot for hideaway items, dish overflow, and coffee essentials. For a small run of wall between the cabinet and shelving, we went for a stunning tile moment, adding that craved splash of color. A high-end tile that might be out of budget in a larger kitchen was a fun splurge for this little area and had the added benefit of tying in with organic greenery. Each piece contributes to the beauty of the room, but each also supports the way the family uses it. And it was my first deep dive into the lesson of where beauty and functionality intersect. Wanting longevity out of the room, I designed with growing kids in mind. Dividing the space into zones that could evolve over time brought functionality to the room. Open shelves organize random objects, while baskets keep toys within reach but out of sight of guests. Nothing was particularly complicated. With many pieces of wall decor and art still in storage, this was a simple way to pull it all together. Blending pieces of varying sizes, frame finishes, and style of art was challenging at first, but came together with patience and trial and error. The result was a balanced composition of colorful, playful, and sentimental pieces. Together, they gave the room a personality that no matching set ever could, and I enjoyed the process so much, I started experimenting with galleries all over the house. Now, they have become a cherished branch of my design work. Making use of the wall to display a kid-sized grocery market made the space fully functional, while the vent became barely noticeable. I founded Harper Rae Design Co at a time in my life when making a house into a home was front and center. I was a new mom of two girls under two, having birthed my second just three weeks after moving into a ‘90s fixer upper. I didn’t realize the extent of it then, but I was completely overwhelmed. New babies and home renovations completely disrupted our routines and my nervous system was fried. Throughout all the madness, I wanted desperately to feel grounded and supported, so my home became my refuge. I dove deep into designing a kitchen that could accommodate our growing family, adding built-in storage into the living room to store the influx of toys and blankets, and creating a play space that would delight both child and adult. In the end, we had a home we could thrive in as a budding family of four. It was an exciting and pressurized experience, but the payoff was immense and I came away loving the design process. The clients I have worked with come from a range of backgrounds, lifestyles, and interests, and their homes should be a reflection of that.
